Fast forward 50 years, and you find London crawling with fabricated elephants and giant oxen instead of cars, and gecko/parrot hybrids are used to send messages. In this version of history, when Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution, he also discovered the 'threads of life', or DNA - and, more importantly, how to manipulate them and construct new creatures. Some of the differences are that Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated in the evening, as opposed to the afternoon, they have only one son. Leviathan is a book series (and the first book in the series) by Scott Westerfeld that takes place in an alternate version of World War I Europe. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lincoln is also one of the most written about men in history, a subject of endless fascination. I had read all of Saunders’s short fiction collections, as well as a great many interviews and essays, before opening his first novel. George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which last night won the 2017 Booker Prize, is that rare kind of book. ![]() Knowing this, you might expect that fresh, experimental novels would constantly be arriving on my desk, that I would be inundated with literary innovation.īut it is in fact rare to come across a book that does something genuinely new and startling with the form of the novel, a form with a long and distinguished history. I am someone who reads, teaches, and writes about contemporary American fiction for a living. ![]() ![]() I spent the first half of the novel thinking it was basically just Night of the Living Dead with interdimensional pig-mutants instead of zombies, but the second half of the book has more in common with 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s about a strange man who lives in an old house in Ireland that seems to exist on the border of different dimensions. This was a very enjoyable piece of weird fiction. I’ve been meaning to read William Hope Hodgson’s The House on the Borderland for a couple of years, and when I found a free audiobook version last Sunday, I decided the time was right. After reading and reviewing Fritz Leiber’s awesome Our Lady of Darkness last week, I really wanted to read another cool book. ![]() It’s coming close to the end of the year, and I have spent 2019 reading some absolute garbage.
